Устный перевод с и на жестовый язык, как правило, подразумевает перевод с языка жестов или на него звучащей речи или перевод с одного жестового языка на другой. Однако обычно перевод осуществляется между звучащим языком и языком жестов. Отметим, что жестовые языки – это самостоятельные языки, существующие независимо от звучащих языков. Также известен процесс транслитерации, в процессе которого устная речь в буквальном смысле кодируется и передается с помощью рук, но он отличается от перевода с жестового языка или на него.
