Синхронний переклад (СП) (див. Синхронний переклад; Конференц-переклад) завжди був тісно пов'язаний із застосуванням технічного обладнання, позаяк він з'явився і розвивався як технологічно залежний засіб обслуговування зростаючої кількості міжнародних засідань із використанням великої кількості мов. Перші спроби такого перекладу мали місце ще у 1928 р. на конференції Міжнародної організації праці, хоча загальновідомим він став, безумовно, під час роботи Нюрнберзького трибуналу в 1945-46 рр. (Gaiba 1988). А втім, знадобився не один рік, перш ніж зникли сумніви, які існували з приводу такого виду перекладу, особливо, щодо рівня його точності. Так, у першій школі для усних перекладачів, заснованій в 1941 р. в Женеві, СП почали викладати лише в 1947 р .
