Le lien entre le concept de traduction — et, par extension, d’interprétation — et le concept d’histoire invite à approcher leur relation sous deux angles : que peut signifier la traduction pour la compréhension de l’histoire, en particulier celle des pratiques culturelles (politique, science, religion, langue, médias, littérature, etc.) ? En retour, que peut signifier l’histoire pour la compréhension des multiples formes de traduction (comme processus, produit, trope, institution, théorie, etc.) ? Bien que les deux angles soient sans aucun doute suffisamment intéressants pour être étudiés pour eux-mêmes, le second sera privilégié dans ce qui suit, l’histoire étant comprise alors comme un point de vue spécifique appliqué à une variété d’objets matériels étiquetés « traduction ». Bien sûr, il n’est pas nécessaire de rappeler que, comme tout autre point de vue scientifique, celui historique opère une réduction méthodologique sur le monde réel.
