Having developed over the past half-century under the influence of the traditional theory of terminology, recognized methods for managing terminology are largely normative, prescriptive and onomasiological. Granted, when terminology management was carried out for language-planning or academic purposes, such methods were appropriate. However, changes in information technologies, coupled with the expansion of global, linguistically-diversified markets, are creating conditions where commercial enterprises are needing to manage terminology. Corporate information is growing exponentially in volume and is becoming structurally more complex. Intensifying market pressures to reduce translation costs, improve content retrievability in search engines and facilitate the use of content management systems (CMS), have brought terminology management to the forefront of corporate information management strategies.
