目次

コンピュータ支援翻訳（computer-aided translation = CAT）とは、人間の翻訳者の訳出プロセスを支援するためにコンピュータソフトウェアを使うことである。CATという言葉は、翻訳作業の責任が主として人間にあるとしつつも、その翻訳作業の一部をソフトウェアが担い得るということを意味している。このことは機械翻訳（machine translation = MT）とは対照的で、コンピュータに主な翻訳作業を行わせながらも、プリエディットやポストエディットといった人の手の介入が部分的に必要になる。となるとCATというのは、翻訳のなかで機械と人間、それぞれの手がどれくらい加わるかという度合いが違うだけで、様々にありうるその配分のひとつと考えればわかりやすいのかもしれない。
