‘젠더’(여러 성[sex]이 시공간 및 집단에 따라 문화적으로 어떻게 구축되는지를 지칭하는 개념이자 용어)는 1980년대 후반에 번역학의 주요 탐구 대상으로 자리잡기 시작했다. 당시는 페미니즘 이론이 (60–70년대를 거치면서) 다양한 유형으로 발전한 직 후이며, 이 때를 기점으로 ‘번역과 젠더’에 관한 주요 서적과 논문들이 다수 등장하기 시작했다(Simon 1996; Flotow 1997). 한편, ‘젠더’는 90년대 들어 게이 액티비즘(gay activism), 퀴어 이론, 담화 수행성(discursive performativity) 등과 함께 논의되면서 보다 광범위한 뜻을 갖게 되었다. 그리고 이러한 영역들은 지금까지도 번역학계에서 활발히 연구되고 있다.
