Pour décider ce qu’on va voir, ce qu’on va lire ou ce qu’on va acheter, on tend à catégoriser, à  classifier toute production verbale selon un genre donné. Toutes les disciplines, par exemple les études littéraires, l’histoire de l’art, les études cinématographiques, la linguistique, les sciences de l’information, recourent au concept de genre ou de type. La traductologie n’a pas échappé au besoin de définir genres et types textuels. La distinction entre les deux notions n’est pas nouvelle et reste bien problématique, même si, en simplifiant, on peut dire que les genres relèvent du social alors que les types relèvent du linguistique.
