İlk bakışta, mizahı tanımlamak kolaydır. Mizah; eğlenceye, neşeye, içten gelen gülüşe ve kahkahaya yol açan şeydir ve kesinlikle insana ait bir olgudur;  François Rabelais,  “çünkü gülmek insana özgüdür” [“pour ce que rire est le propre de l’homme”] demiştir. Oysa günümüz araştırmaları, ilk bakışta görülen bu basitliği doğrulamaz. Mizah gülmekle çok yakından ilişkili olsa da, ikisinin aynı şekilde insana özgü olduğu doğru değildir. Mizah kavramını açığa kavuşturmanın kısa yollarından biri, mizahın gülmekle ilişkisinin açık olarak incelenmesidir.
