A humor meghatározása első ránézésre könnyűnek tűnhet. A humor szórakoztat, jókedvre derít, önkéntelen mosolyra és nevetésre fakaszt, valamint úgy tűnik, a humor jelensége határozottan az emberek körében fordul elő. Ahogy François Rabelais mondta: „pour ce que rire est le propre de l’homme” [nevetésről ismerszik az ember]. Azonban a legújabb kutatások szerint ez nem olyan egyszerű, mint amilyennek elsőre látszik. Bár a humor és a nevetés szorosan összefüggnek, ez nem jelenti azt, hogy mindkettő egyformán jellemző az emberre. A humor fogalma könnyen tisztázható a humor és a nevetés kapcsolatának elemzésével.
