動的等価、形式的等価、機能的等価、コミュニケーション的等価、内包的等価、外延的等価、テクスト規範的等価、語用論的等価、テクスト的等価、完全な等価、近似の等価、一対一の等価、一対多の等価、一対零の等価、意味的な等価、内容の等価、文体の等価、語彙の等価…等価の種類は豊富にある。等価の問題には、翻訳の実践そのものと同じぐらい、長い歴史があるのだ。メアリー・スネル=ホーンビー (Mary Snell-Hornby) (1988: 18-19) によると、ロマーン・ヤコブソン (Roman Jakobson) の “On Linguistic Aspects of Translation” (1959) が、そのあと数十年に及ぶ、等価に関する論争の火ぶたを切った。ケビン・ウィンドル (Kevin Windle) とアンソニー・ピム (Anthony Pym) によると、「等価の初期の概念」は、ジャン=ポール・ヴィネイ (Jean-Paul Vinay) と、ジャン・ダルベルネ (Jean Darbelnet) による Stylistique Comparée du Francais et de l’Anglais (1958) にさかのぼる (Windle and Pym 2011: 16) 。一方、オルフラム・ウィルス (Wolfram Wilss) は、等価は古くから翻訳についての理論的思索の中で、脚光を浴びていたとまで述べる (Wilss 1977: 156) 。
