‘유럽중심주의’는 대개 유럽 관점에서 세계를 보는 것을 뜻한다. 유럽중심주의라는 관행이 보통 유럽이 타 지역을 식민 통치한 역사와 결부되어 있는 만큼, 이 개념은 탈식민주의 시기에 주조된 개념으로 볼 수 있다. 지리문화적 관점에서 유사한 의미를 가졌으나 다른 시대, 다른 상황을 지칭하는 개념들로 미국중심주의 (Americentrism), 중화주의(Sinocentrism), 아프리카 중심주의(Afrocentrism) 등이 있다. ‘유럽중심주의’ 는 번역학( Translation Studies ) 에서만 사용되는 개념이 아니다. 이 주제 관련 유사 논쟁이 기타 학문분야에서도 다양한 강도로 전개되어 왔는데, 이를테면 사회학이 그러한 경우에 해당된다. Shohat and Stam(1994)이 미디어 연구 분야에서 수행한 탁월한 작업들이 그 예이다.
