Якщо багатомовність –« одночасне функціонування двох чи більше мов »(у тексті, в індивідуальному мовленні чи в суспільстві загалом), а переклад традиційно –« заміна однієї мови іншою », згідно з твердженням Ґрутмана (Grutman 2009: 182), то переклад і багатомовність перебувають у дуже складних відношеннях. Хоча в центрі багатомовності знаходимо переклад, дивно, що донедавна переклад та багатомовність рідко досліджувалися у взаємозв’язках, і Ґрутман у 2009 році продовжує дотримуватися чіткої дихотомії між ними. Одначе протягом останнього десятиріччя на зв’язки між багатомовністю та перекладом звернули увагу деякі науковці. Недавні публікації охоплюють чимало ділянок та тем – художній переклад, аудіовізуальний переклад, локалізація, мовне планування, усний переклад для потреб громади, мовну політику і т. д. – і велику кількість країн, і регіонів, і суспільних інститутів – Австралію, Південно-Африканську Республіку, Нігерію, Ізраїль, Організацію Об’єднаних Націй, Європейський Союз тощо. Наступні розділи присвячені складним взаємовідносинам між перекладом та багатомовністю на рівні текстів, інститутів та суспільства, рівнях, які, звісно, в дійсності щільно переплітаються.
