Des premiers cours universitaires de traduction dans les années 1930 (à Mannheim, Heidelberg, Montréal) aux nombreux programmes de formation d’aujourd’hui, attitudes et points de vue pédagogiques se sont multipliés (Pym, 2009). Conférences, ateliers, tables rondes, numéros spéciaux de revues apparaissent désormais régulièrement. Deux revues sont d’ailleurs entièrement dédiés à la pédagogie : The Interpreter and Translator Trainer (depuis 2007) et Revista Electrónica de Didáctica de la Traducción y la Interpretación (REDIT, depuis 2009). Les publications dans ce domaine ont nettement augmenté. Ce qui n’implique pas cependant que la pédagogie en traduction s’appuie maintenant sur des assises solides et des principes clairs. On peut même affirmer le contraire: il n’y a pas de consensus sur les fondements méthodologiques de la formation en traduction. On peut néanmoins noter dans nombre d’endroits le passage d’une approche  basée sur l’enseignant à une approche basée sur l’apprenant, sinon un mélange des deux.
