У 1972 році у статті, присвяченій назві та змісту досліджень явищ, пов’язаних з перекладом, Джеймс С. Голмз (Holmes 1988) передбачив виникнення в дескриптивному перекладознавстві напряму, який вивчатиме процес перекладу, назвавши його « психологією перекладу ». За Голмзом (Holmes 1988: 72), психологія перекладу мала б досліджувати « процес та акт самого перекладу », включаючи « систематичні дослідження в лабораторних умовах ».
