Тест (або іспит) може використовуватися для оцінювання знань, умінь або здібності до письмового чи усного перекладу. Значення « оцінювання » англійською мовою може передаватися двома термінами. Перший (assessment) стосується оцінювання окремої особи, курсу навчання або закладу освіти і полягає в документуванні знань, умінь, здібностей та переконань за певними ознаками. Змістом другого терміну (evaluation) є регулярне встановлення якості, вартості чи значення будь-кого чи будь-чого шляхом порівняння із відповідними критеріями. В методиці навчання письмового та усного перекладу другий термін (evaluation) часто вживається як синонім « тестування », хоча він таким і не є.
