Toda a comunicação humana requer um conjunto de atividades cognitivas complexas e diversificadas. De igual modo, qualquer tipo de tradução é, inerentemente, uma atividade cognitiva complexa que exige aos indivíduos que a executam um conjunto de conhecimentos e de capacidades (ver Competence) aplicados durante o ato de traduzir: trata-se do translation process. É o domínio deste conjunto de componentes cognitivos específicos e relevantes que distingue aqueles indivíduos que conseguem realizar eficazmente a tarefa de tradução. Tais componentes levaram Hurtado Albir (2001: 375) a definir o processo tradutório como um processo cognitivo complexo, que tem uma natureza interativa e não-linear e que engloba processos controlados e não controlados, exigindo a resolução de problemas, tomadas de decisão e a utilização de estratégias e táticas de tradução.
