Ein Beitrag über ‚Translation Studies‘ in einem Handbook of Translation Studies birgt die Gefahr, als überflüssiges, unnötiges oder narzisstisch anmutendes Unterfangen angesehen zu werden. Sicher werden aktuelle Trends und Strömungen auf dem Gebiet der Translation Studies auch in den zahlreichen anderen Beiträgen dieses Handbuchs thematisiert, decken diese doch einen umfassenden Themenkomplex – von „Adaptation“ bis hin zu „Internet und Translation“ – ab. Der Begriff ‚Translation Studies‘ an sich ist jedoch alles andere als unumstritten. Diese Begriffsproblematik soll im Folgenden durch die Konzentration auf das Wesen, die Geschichte, die Entwicklung und die Ansätze der Translation Studies seit der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zumindest ansatzweise vereinfacht werden. Dies dient dem besseren Verständnis von Themengebieten, die in diesem Handbuch an anderer Stelle detaillierter behandelt werden; außerdem sollen zentrale Aspekte der Diskussion herausgestellt werden.
