تُعدُّ الترجمة السمعبصريّة (AVT) وافداً جديداً إلى حدٍ ما في مجال دراسات الترجمة (TS)، ومع هذا فقد شقّت طريقها لتصل إلى قلب هذا المجال خلال العقدين المنصرمين. ويمكن القول أن ترجمة الحوار التي تظهر بين مشاهد الفيلم في الأفلام الصامتة (intertitles) هي أوّل شكل من أشكال الترجمة السمعبصريّة. لكنّ الحاجة المُلحَّة إلى وجود هذا النوع من الترجمة قد زاد مع ظهور الأفلام الناطقة، في فترة العشرينيّات من القرن الماضي. وأصبح توفير ترجمات مصاحبة لهذه الأفلام أمراً ضرورياً (وذلك لضمان تصدير الأفلام وخصوصاً لصناعة السينما الأمريكيّة). ومنذ ذلك الحين لم يقتصر الأمر على تجربة أشكال متعددة من الترجمة السمعبصريّة وحسب، بل امتد إلى إنتاج نسخ عدة بلغات متعددة للفيلم ذاته. وسريعاّ ما أصبحت الترجمة المرئيّة (subtitling) والدبلجة (dubbing) هما النمطين المفضّلين في الترجمة السمعبصريّة. وكانت العوامل الاقتصاديّة، والأيدلوجيّة، والبراجماتيّة في الدولة التي يُترجم الفيلم للغتها آنذاك هي التي تُحتم الاختيار بين النمطين. وقد نُشرت أبحاث مبدئيّة في مجال الترجمة السمعبصريّة خلال فترة منتصف الخمسينيّات والستينيّات من القرن الماضي إلا أنّ الفترة الحقيقيّة لازدهار البحوث والمنشورات لم تبدأ في هذا المجال حتى أوائل تسعينيّات القرن العشرين.
