تتجلى معالم التعاون في كل أنواع سيناريوهات الترجمة وكذا عبر عملية الترجمة برمتها، وذلك بدءا من الكتاب ومرورا بالناشر ووكالات الترجمة وصولا إلى المترجم. ويمكن للتعاون أن يكون بين المترجمين وأي جهة من هذه الجهات الفاعلة الأخرى، أو بين مترجميْن أو أكثر. وتؤكد المقاربات الوظيفية لنظرية الترجمة (نورد 1997) هذه الطبيعة التعاونية لعملية الترجمة ككل، وبالتالي فإن تعريف الترجمة التعاونية بشكل عام يقتضي أن يتعاون فاعلان أو أكثر فيما بينهم بطريقة ما لتكون الترجمة ثمرة ذلك التعاون. ويمكن للترجمة التعاونية أيضا أن يكون لها معنى أكثر تحديدا في إشارة إلى الوضع الذي يوجد عليه مترجمان أو أكثر حيث يشتغلون معا لإخراج منتج مترجم واحد إلى حيز الوجود. وقد أضحى المصطلح أيضا مرتبطا ارتباطا وثيقا بمفاهيم ترجمة الجماعة والترجمة الاجتماعية والترجمة التطوعية وترجمة الهواة وسطرجة الهواة وكذا الترجمة التي تستعين بمصادر خارجية. ويتجلى هذا الترابط الوثيق للمفاهيم في المصطلح سي تي³ CT (ينطق سي تي مكعب) الذي وضعه دي بالما وكيلي (2008) للإشارة إلى "الجماعةCommunity " و"التكنونوجيا التعاونيةCollaborative technology " و"الترجمة التي تستعين بمصادر خارجية Crowdsourcing" وذلك في مجال التوطين. ويمكن للترجمة التعاونية أن تجد لها مكانا في العديد من الميادين بما في ذلك ترجمة ما هو تقني وأدبي (مثل أغورني 2005؛ روسلين 2001) وكذا الأجناس الأدبية الشعبية (مثل أوهاغان 2009).
