Applying Frame Semantics to Cultural Linguistics

Exploring the FrameNet model through an ethnocognitive lexicographic study on classical Arabic vocabulary in Early Arabic poetry

Abstract
The article explores the applicability of Frame Semantics (FS) within Cultural Linguistics (CuL) and its potential for comparative studies. Through a case study on Classical Arabic vocabulary in Early Arabic Poetry, it examines the FrameNet lexicographic model and assesses how it can describe cultural conceptualizations such as schemata, categories, metaphors, and metonymies. The paper proposes augmentations to FrameNet to enhance its applicability in CuL research. Tested in the case study, the augmented model demonstrates strong potential for both cultural and comparative linguistic studies. Situating the model within ethnocognitive lexicography, the article outlines opportunities for studying Arabic language and culture.
