Abstract
Emerging trends in Chinese study abroad programs at U.S. universities
This paper examines the characteristics, recent developments, and challenges of China-based study abroad programs at U.S. universities in the post-pandemic era. It reviews new initiatives by Chinese universities to attract international students and analyzes the emerging features of U.S. summer study abroad programs in China. The review suggests that experiential learning enhances students’ Chinese language proficiency, challenges stereotypes, strengthens intercultural competence, deepens understanding of cultural diversity and their own native culture, and fosters friendships with Chinese students. These innovative program models also support the development of Chinese language education at U.S. universities and broaden students’ future academic and career opportunities.
