Chapter 6Political cartoons along the mono-multimodal metaphor continuum
The presidential election in Italy 2022
This content is being prepared for publication; it may be subject to changes.
Abstract
In contexts such as advertising or cartoons, the intertwining of verbal and pictorial modes can
lead to multimodal metaphors. This chapter discusses the verbal metaphors used in Italian press coverage
(Corriere della
Sera) and the mono- and multimodal metaphors present in the cartoons by Giannelli in the
same newspaper with regard to parallels, in the context of the Italian presidential elections in 2022. The overlapping
of the verbal and pictorial representation in the cartoons allows for the reference to a continuum between mono- and
multimodal metaphors in a narrow sense. The characterization of this continuum is provided by means of selected
examples.
