Chapter 11Ukrainian war discourse
An idea-turned-effect analysis
This content is being prepared for publication; it may be subject to changes.
Abstract
The proposed idea-turned-effect analysis applies the cognitive structures comprising image
schemas, force dynamics and metaphoric schemas to revealing how the views articulated in the news, public or creative
variants of Ukrainian war discourse are supposed to transform into corresponding effects. It is found that after two
years of the Russia-Ukraine full-fledged war the news discourse creates three confrontational effects: narrow,
covering the latest two years; broad, spanning the whole of ten years of the conflict; medium, contrasting the two
years to ten. The public discourse of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy forms resistance, confrontational, and victory
effects. The creative discourse comprising books, poems and songs mainly rests on metaphoric effects conceptualizing
the war as an unlawful and deadly invasion, destruction, devastation and an overall confrontation.
