A systematic synthesis of translanguaging pedagogy
Mapping methodological trends and contextual gaps

Abstract
This systematic review synthesizes empirical research on pedagogical translanguaging in second and foreign
language (L2/FL) education published between 2014 and 2024. Following the six-step systematic review framework proposed by Petticrew, Mark, and Helen Roberts. 2006. Systematic
Reviews in the Social Sciences: A Practical
Guide. Oxford: Blackwell. , the review aims to identify prevalent themes,
methodological approaches, and contextual characteristics in the literature, and to pinpoint significant gaps — most notably the
extreme underrepresentation of less commonly taught languages. The analysis encompasses 56 peer-reviewed studies and employs a
reflexive thematic analysis (Braun, Virginia, and Victoria Clarke. 2019. “Reflecting
on Reflexive Thematic Analysis.” Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and
Health 11 (4): 589–597. ) alongside a systematic
quantitative analysis of study characteristics. The findings reveal a cohesive research narrative focused on the reported benefits
of integrating learners’ multilingual repertoires to foster inclusive classrooms and support comprehension. The synthesis also
identifies a distinct methodological profile: the evidence base is predominantly qualitative and small-scale, with a substantial
concentration on English as the target language and on tertiary education contexts. Within the English-language peer-reviewed
literature, a critical gap is the near absence of research on languages other than English. Caveat: this finding is based on a
review that excluded non-English publications. Recurrent tensions are documented between the advocated potential of
translanguaging and practical implementation challenges, including teacher preparedness and institutional constraints. While
pedagogical translanguaging is presented in the literature as a theoretical framework for multilingual pedagogy, the synthesis
highlights the need for more methodologically diverse and linguistically inclusive research, as current claims derive primarily
from small-scale qualitative studies. Future directions include expanding inquiry into underrepresented linguistic contexts,
(e.g., less commonly taught languages such as Persian, Arabic, Swahili, or Thai) and developing practical supports for educators
to translate principles into sustainable classroom practice.
