Multidimensional Linguistic Justice

How can linguistic justice be achieved and measured in increasingly multilingual societies? This book offers an innovative framework for advancing just and effective Language Policy and Planning (LPP) by transforming the abstract ideal of linguistic justice into a practical tool for assessment and policymaking. Drawing on the capability approach, it defines linguistic justice as the freedom of individuals to access and exercise essential language-based capabilities across key areas of public life. The book identifies the most fundamental language-dependent public goods and services by analysing the principles and rights that societies have enshrined in their constitutions. These capabilities are then translated into measurable indicators, forming the Multidimensional Linguistic Justice Index (MLJI). Through a set of indicators and an intuitive tiered visual representation, the MLJI provides an accessible means of comparison across jurisdictions. Combining normative philosophy, sociolinguistics, and public policy, the book equips practitioners and academics with an important tool for evaluating and promoting linguistic justice.
