Distinction is drawn between diagrams and picto-grams, and between the type of diagrams under discussion and those having other functions. The use of the word 'graph' in this context is considered. Seven characteristics are identified and illustrated; their sequencing and ranking are examined. Other lesser characteristics are mentioned, as is the prevalence of the rectilinear mode in diagram design.
