“Per a Lleida ja ‘no’ està bé”
Stereotypes of Lleida and its people along with the stigmatization of its dialect have hindered the linguistic and emotional wellbeing which any community requires. On the contrary, they have empowered the low self-esteem that exudes from the legendary sentence: “It is good enough for Lleida.”
Lleidan society has had to face all kinds of extreme historical vicissitudes to show its Catalanness is non-negotiable. However, this has often meant abandoning some rights, such as local linguistic features.
Since the nineties, there have been reports of specialists and initiatives in favour of adjusting the standard to geographic diversity of Catalan and avoid problems of dialectal diglossia and, ultimately, disaffection for the lack of identification with the corpus.
We analyse the changes in the last years regarding the visibility of north-western Catalan in the media and in schools, the speakers’ attitude, and remaining intra-community linguistic prejudice.
