Hong Chai-Song: Remarks on Verbs of Movement in Korean: the Construction O v-le.
Complex constructions in Korean are built by means of verbal conjunctional suffixes. The suffix Ie is shown to have semantic selection on the subordinate verb which must be a verb of movement. The syntactic properties induced by this conjunctional suffix are studied and contrasted with other intuitively related constructions. This study leads to disambiguation of the construction and allows a systematic study with respect to the lexicon: close to 300 verbs have been found to enter the construction. One finds both proper Korean verbs and Sino-Korean ones. All convey the meaning of movement of the subject. The syntactic and semantic status of the constructions has been found to be strikingly similar to the situation found in certain Romance languages.
