Este artículo se ocupa de diversos procedimientos de metarrepresentación en el español hablado: el discurso directo y la ironía. Se establecen diferencias entre diversas habilidades metarrepresentacionales, como el discurso directo, la metáfora o los evidenciales, por un lado, y la ironía, por otro, ya que esta última constituye una habilidad de orden superior que puede emplear aquellas como indicadores. El análisis en metarrepresentaciones aporta una visión más compleja de tales hechos pragmáticos. Asimismo, el examen de ejemplos reales de conversación permite profundizar en casos no prototípicos.
