Samoan narratives

Sociocultural perspectives

Samoan narratives establish the identity of story tellers as individuals and as part of social groups. Traditional oral narratives remain vibrant for sociocultural purposes. Social actions are integrated into local stories and retained in collective memories of families and villages. Modern forms of narration have also been adopted and adapted for use and expression. The continuing interface between past and present characterises contemporary Samoan stories. These narrations are also a process of comprehending oneself and one’s identity within and outside of one’s community.
