World Englishes and Peace Sociolinguistics
Towards a common goal of linguistic understanding
In recent decades, peace has been studied as a transdisciplinary issue from the perspective of several disciplinary orientations which include Psychology, Education and more recently Linguistics. In this article, I argue for the contributions of World Englishes and the budding field of Peace Sociolinguistics and describe them as critical to a better understanding of peace dynamics across many areas. Concepts from Peace Studies are used to describe linguistic relations both at the macro and the micro level. In this context, peace and language relate to each other in various ways which include the use of language to achieve a situation of peace, education for peace through language, and finally making peace with languages (such as English) by promoting their harmonizing functions.
