The Organisation and Work of the National Coal Board Translation Section
I. Abstracts Articles for abstracting are selected by the Technical Editor of the Production Department and the Head of the Scientific Intelligence Section, in consultation with the Head of the Translation Section when necessary. The finished abstracts are distributed in two bulletins. The first, known as Production Abstracts, is distributed to the Board's Engineers at Headquarters and throughout the country. Some 350 copies of each issue are sent out every month; the number of abstracts in a given issue is from 25 to 35, and appropriate illustrations are included. Most of these abstracts are informative in character, that is, they contain the "meat" of an article and are intended to make a full translation unnecessary. The second bulletin, entitled Scientific Abstracts, consists principally of indicative abstracts, which are not illustrated. The intention, in this case, is to bring to the notice of the Board's Scientific and Research staff articles dealing with their own special fields. Some 200 copies of this bulletin are issued every two months, and each issue contains between 30 and 40 abstracts.
