Translation revision
A study of the performance of ten professional translators revising a legal text
This paper presents some results from an empirical study on translation revision. Ten professional translators were asked to think aloud while revising three texts that had been translated from French into German. The quality of the revised translations was assessed by a subject-matter expert for each text. The focus of the analysis was on investigating on the one hand the changes the revisers made in the draft translations, or their failures to make changes; and on their task definition on the other hand. We will present here only the results from the revision of one text, a legal one. The study sheds light on revision as a distinct and hitherto often neglected component of the overall process of producing translations.
