Chapter 7
Orality and writing in the historiography of Afro-descendant slaves
This article first compares the historiography of slavery in the United States to that of Latin America, and then examines historians’ recent accomplishments in their attempt to rescue the voices of slaves from mostly illiterate communities of colonial Iberian America. The study concludes by focusing on the author’s research on slave resistance in the Caribbean region of Cartagena, Colombia.
