The Development of Periphrastic do in English

SUMMARY Kroch (1989b) considers that there grounds for arguing in favor of a grammatical reanalysis in the development of periphrastic do in the period 1550-1575. He separates the data taken from Ellegård's (1953) work accordingly, claiming that across the contexts the changes have both the same starting and end points and the same slope. We assume that there is no ground for such reanalysis. If we take all the periods for which Ellegård provides data, and fit them to the logistic curve, it turns out that these contexts do have different slopes. Kroch's claim for constancy in the rate of change, therefore, does not stand up upon closer scrutiny. Rather, it seems to be the case that the changes in the different contexts begin at different times, and that the later a change begins, the sharper its slope becomes. Further, within each context, there appears to be a significant tendency for the high frequency words to change late and therefore to have a sharp slope. RÉSUMÉ Kroch (1989b) estime étayer par assez de faits son hypothèse qu'une réanalyse grammaticale s'impose dans le développement du do périphrastique de l'anglais pendant le période 1550-1575. Kroch classe les données prises à l'étude de Ellegård (1953) qui s'accordent avec cette hypothèse, et il prétend qu'à travers tous les contextes les changements offrent des points de départ et des points d'arrivée indentiques, fruits des tendances analogues. L'auteur du présent article ne voit en revanche aucune raison quit soit en faveur d'une telle réanalyse. En effet, si l'on prend tous les périodes documentées par Ellegård, et qu'on les intègre dans une courbe logistique, il s'avère que ces contextes montrent des courbes différentes. Par conséquent, l'inprétention de Kroch en faveur d'une constante dans le taux de changement n'est pas étayée par les faits. Il semble plutôt que les changements dans les contextes différents commencent à des moments différents: plus tardif est le début du changement, plus raide devient la pente. De plus, il semble y avoir une tendance significative parmi les mots de haute fréquence à changer tard, et à montrer alors une pente raide. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Kroch (1989b) ist der Auffassung, daß hinreichend Griinde bestünden, eine grammatische Reanalyse bezüglich der Entwicklung des periphrastischen do des Englischen innerhalb des Zeitraums 1550-1575 anzusetzen. Dement-sprechend teilt Kroch die Daten auf, die er in Ellegårds (1953) Arbeit vorfand, mit der Behauptung, daß in alien Kontexten diese Veränderungen durchweg dieselben Anfangs- und Endpunkte und dieselbe Neigung der S-Kurve zeigen. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz hingegen wird die Auffassung vertreten, daB kein Grund fur eine solche Reanalyse bestehe. Wenn man nàmlich aile Perioden nimmt, fur die Ellegård Daten liefert, und sie in eine logistische Kurve einglie-dert, dann erweist es sich nàmlich, daB dièse Kontexte in der Tat verschiedene Neigungen haben. Krochs Behauptung, daB eine konstante Rate des syntak-tischen Wandels vorliege, kann nicht belegt werden. Stattdessen scheint es der Fall zu sein, daB die Verànderungen in verschiedenen Kontexten zu verschie-denen Zeiten einsetzen und daB je spàter ein Wandel einsetzt, desto steiler die Neigung wird. AuBerdem scheint sich innerhalb eines jeden Kontexts eine nicht unerhebliche Neigung fiir Worter mit hoher Frequenz zu zeigen, sich spåt zu wandeln und daher eine steile Neigung aufweisen.
