This encyclopaedia of one of the major fields of language studies is a continuously updated source of state-of-the-art information for anyone interested in language use, using the authoritative Handbook of Pragmatics as a basis (edited by the IPrA Research Center since 1995).
It provides easy access for scholars with widely divergent backgrounds but with convergent interests in the use and functioning of language to the different topics, traditions and methods which together make up the field of Pragmatics, broadly conceived as “the cognitive, social and cultural study of language and communication”.
The Handbook is being expanded and revised annually, both in print and online. Future versions will add new records and will include updates, rewritings and extensive revisions of already existing records.
The Handbook of Pragmatics Online is available from www.benjamins.com/online as well as a free 90-day trial. The Handbook is also available in combination with the Bibliography of Pragmatics Online at a discounted rate.

“The number one resource for all people trying to come to grips with what is sought after in the field and to embark upon the field. This will become self-evident from the fact that almost every conceivable topic up to the time of writing in connection with the rubric of pragmatic is covered in the Handbook and that, more importantly, all the topics are written by leading scholars, many of whom are among the foremost authorities in their field. In other words, the breadth and the authoritativeness of the Handbook is beyond doubt.”
