Battlefield victory
Lexical transfer in Medieval Anglo-Latin
This paper addresses several expressions from the Anglo-Latin chronicles of the ninth-twelfth centuries connected with the military milieu (e.g. dominor loco funeris or accipio victoriam) and their possible sources in Old English phraseology. The Anglo-Latin data is compared to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle where similar phrases are attested and to the use of military vocabulary in Latin sources outside England. The coinage of such expressions is analysed in terms of first-language lexical transfer.
