This chapter offers an overview of geographical variation in Basque. After discussing several proposals for the classification of Basque dialects, the main phenomena showing dialectal variation are introduced. Variation in morphosyntactic features, nominal inflection, verbal inflection, derivational morphology and phonology are discussed in separate sections. Two additional sections are devoted to the historical development of Basque dialects and to the nature of the written regional standards known as “literary” dialects.
