The author found out that the concepts used to evaluate a syntactic theory as important as that of Tesnière were insufficient. He suggests a new approach based on a dichotomy "categorial syntax" versus "functional syntax". This two concepts did not only allow the identification of Tesnière's syntax global form, that was shown to be both categorial and functional, but eases the inventory of its internal components, identified under headings such as "categorial syntax" and "functional syntax".
