Passé composé et insularisation phrastique dans L’Étranger d’A. Camus
De quelques problèmes de traduction en catalan et en castillan
Jacques Bres | Université Paul-Valéry – Montpellier 3
How does the French passé
composé contribute to making each sentence of
L’Étranger look like “an island”, to quote
J.-P. Sartre? After going through the grammaticalization of the
passé composé into a narrative past tense, and defining narrative
textuality, we consider three possible explanatory hypotheses: the
deictic anchoring of the passé composé, its epistemic dimension as
testimony, its retrospective aspectual representation of internal
time. Having selected the third hypothesis and explained why the
aspect of the passé composé tends to close each situation on itself,
we study the problems encountered and the solutions suggested by
translators of L’Étranger into two Romance languages devoid of a verbal tense semantically equivalent to the French passé composé: Catalan and
Castilian.
