This article offers a brief survey of children’s literature in North Frisian, a hitherto largely unexplored area. It first gives a chronological overview of the literature from the early 20th century until about 1970, the postulated first epoch, before looking at the actors and the categories in the second epoch up to the present day. Whereas the first epoch is relatively homogenous with respect to authors and works, mostly teachers working with traditional culture and tales, the second epoch displays a greater variety, increasingly using translations from other languages, but developing with them new concepts for books with a modern layout. In both epochs, educational materials play a central role. In the second epoch, the analysis postulates 16 categories of literature, each with varying numbers of publications. Some books are published in several dialects, and bilingual editions are increasing in number. Financing Frisian literature remains a problem.
